Lost in the shuffle

Here are a few pics from back when my parents visited. Just found them while looking through some other files. Papa thought it was fun to give Jasper an empty beer bottle, while I enjoyed putting my straw hat on the little guy. Thanks to that little adventure, Jasper now likes to dig beer bottles out of the recycle bin!

I spilled the beans.

Literally. I spilled a bowl full of black beans, corn and peas just AFTER I was cleaning up Jasper's lunch mess. Nice, huh? Jasper didn't seem to mind too much.

Yard Project

Seth and I completed a landscaping project this weekend, and thanks to Jasper's patience, we did it in one day.

Here are the pics. A good portion of the plants are transplants, so we may have to do more planting if they don't survive. Only time will tell. It looks a little sparse right now, but they are all perennials so each year they should return more lush and lively than before.

Oh my...

I'll start with a story and finish with some pics, that way, you'll go away from this with the cute image of Jasper in your head and not the thought of this little pistol reeking havoc around my house.

Today he was a bit fussy before his morning nap, but I had a work meeting to prepare for so I let him work the crankies out and hoped he'd fall asleep. He did settle down and for about 45 or 50 minutes he was silent. So silent, I can only assume, he was sleeping. Eventually I heard him stir, but my meeting wasn't over and he wasn't crying. So I let him be for about five or 10 minutes. When I went to his room I found him sitting up in his crib with just a T-shirt on. The diaper was thrown to one corner of the crib and his pants in the other. Sitting among three large puddles of pee he looked up at me and smiled that big, nose-wrinkling smile while clenching the binky in his mouth. His hands were, um, otherwise occupied.

Might I remind you that Jasper is 8 1/2 months old. The diaper I get. It's not that hard. But he pulled off his PJ pants. Completely. We started calling him Houdini when he broke out of the Miracle Blanket, which is just a warm, fuzzy name for a baby straitjacket, when he was about four months old. This seems a little mixture of Curious George and The Beaver. At his age it's still innocent curiosity, not defiance, right? George just stumbled into trouble and The Beav never wanted to disappoint his Mommy and Daddy. In my mind's eye I can see the look of excitement Jasper's eyes likely revealed when -- POP -- his pants must have shot off with a giant tug at the ankles.

Janet gave me her thoughts, "Once more, and it's a coincidence. Twice more, and he really does know what he's doing." Stay tuned!

Seven Years and Counting

Yesterday Seth and I celebrated our seventh wedding anniversary. Well, maybe celebrated isn't the right word. Marked? Acknowledged? Remembered?

At about 8 last night we sat down at the table to eat our Burgerville hamburgers that Seth ran out to get at the last minute. We did down a beer with our burgers -- don't judge, we'd had a hard day.

I was busy with a physical therapy appointment in the morning for my foot with is healing nicely but still not quite 100 percent. Then in the afternoon I had a work-related meeting I'm hoping to tell you more about at a later date. And yet later in the afternoon I had to take Wiley to the doggy dermatologist for his ongoing skin problem. Four hours later we returned home with new food, shampoo and meds.

The short version is this: We think Wiley may have a food allergy that is causing itching. The constant itching has led to scratching and chewing. This has caused him to get sores on his body which has led to multiple infections and more itching and scratching. The poor guy is in an E collar again until the itching stops. The current plan is meds to get rid of the infection. Shampoo to help ease the irritation. New diet to try to curb what we think could be a food allergy. He also has just become disinterested in his old food, and we need him to eat well to get better. The bummer is that he is under strict orders to eat nothing but the food and treats given to us by the vet. That means stray Cheerios and his favorite cheese treats are out. It will be a three ring circus around here to get everyone fed until we get a new groove down, but we're willing to try just about anything to get Wiley well.

There is still a possibility that the initial irritation was caused by something other than an allergy. The vet we saw, who was great, I might add, is sure it was not a stress problem caused by Jasper's arrival. If it is not an allergy she thinks it could be something metabolic. The reason we're not chasing that down right now is that he has shown no major symptoms of something such as diabetes or a thyroid disorder (no major weight gain/loss, excessive thirst, and so on).

While we were busy, Seth and Jasper did have some fun together. Check out pics here.

Here's to hoping we can figure it out, so Wiley can feel well again. And perhaps, if only for a short time, we can have a healthy household.

Laughing and Crying

Sorry it's been a while. With guests and then travel and then trying to catch our breath, it seems things have been a bit crazy. And sleepless. Jasper is waking up several times a night, once again. It's like he's a newborn -- every two hours last night. Sigh.

I think he is exploring the idea that he has these emotions that generate reactions. Crying means momma comes to me. Laughing means I'm the center of attention. How glorious is that?

The good news is that the laughing is just about enough to make me forget how I was up all night. He's a hoot. We absolutely cannot keep the guy still right now. In fact, yesterday I was at the grocery store with Jasper in tow. I was trying to pick out a bottle of wine with a very nice mother tapped me on the shoulder and said, "I'm not sure if you know it, but he's standing up." Yep. In the cart, buckled in, my little man twisted around and was attempting to reach for something down inside the cart. I wasn't sure whether to be more embarrassed that someone else had to tell me that my kid was about to take a nose dive into the cart or that I was too consumed with my wine selection to notice. Or worse -- the combination of both.

See the video below. Out of frustration while trying to change a diaper on a baby who constantly flips onto his belly and crawls, Seth threw something on the floor. Jasper started cracking up. Seth did it again. Jasper laughed again. He-ed and haw-ed!
